Her heart felt like it would leap out of chest any second now. She could hear the two men’s footsteps getting closer and closer. How did they know where she was? Misty Miller could completely disappear to the naked eye thanks Gongen stealth suit she lifted a few months from a couple of smugglers. Yet, somehow these two men had followed her all the way from their ship about ten blocks back.
She huddled around a corner trying to catch her breath her hands still shaking uncontrollably. How did it come to this, just an hour ago she looking for a way to pay off the massive bar tab she piled up two nights ago trying to drink away the memory of her favorite team losing the Dead Plant Chase, again. The jerk bartender wouldn’t even give her a discount after all the flirting she did, then again she had up chucked on his new shoes.
“I shouldn’t drink so much whiskey,” she thought “it does strange things to me.”
She began to recall the event that lead to her current predicament. “These men looked like extremely easy marks. Two stuffy business men, dressed in matching black suits, eyed everyone in the bar like they thought they all were going to pull out a Spassky at any moment and rob them. They reeked of money and the blue gloves they had on made them stand out as upper class like a Shi in the Nest. The best part was when Joker Danniko walked in the one with glasses whispered something to other one with the bluest eyes I had ever seen and then they left very quickly. Normally I would have grabbed Nicky Strahl and we would have followed them back to their ship and robbed them blind but because of the massive tap I drank the two nights ago I couldn’t risk splitting the purse.”
They were pretty easy to follow and within twenty minutes she had tailed them all the way back to their ship, fifteen blocks from the Nest. They had a Tran Sun Class 8 Heavy Freighter which Misty knew would hold great stuff in its twin multi use bays.
She activated her stealth suit and got on board. It seemed weird to her that there were no guards on the ship or anyone other than the two business men. The multi use bays had nothing in them other than a few high quality prison cells. What kind of men were these two? The more she explored the ship the more questions she had. Why did they have more tranquilizers on board than a Gongen hospital? Why was there no one else on the ship? What did they need prison cells for? No human faction approved of slavery. Where they working for the Shi? Those two didn’t look like they could harm a fly. They didn’t even look like they could survive a week in Maverick space.
As she wondered around the ship looking for something worth her time and effort she overheard the two men talking.
“We can’t go after Danniko tonight; we need a little more time to prepare for the possibilities of her being able to resist us.”
“You are right; her combat abilities will make things very unpleasant if she does somehow resist us.”
Misty was unable to control her curiosity. Why did they need Joker Danniko? Were they trying to get information about the Cartel? That would explain the holding cells. They would capture her and interrogate her about the Cartel. She had to warn Joker, but at a price. First she needed to get a picture of these men. They say a picture is worth a thousand words; hopefully this one will be worth a thousand creds.
She quickly pulled out her micro camera and focused on the two business men. She had to line up their faces perfectly, the better the picture the more money she could get. As her finger squeezed the button to take the picture she realized she had forgotten to turn off the flash.
“Click”
As the room with the two men was enveloped with the white flash she cursed herself for being so stupid. An almost perfect job ruined by over eagerness.
Luckily the two men were looking in her direction as the flash went off and were momentarily blinded by it. They wouldn’t be stunned for long but it would be more than enough time for her to start making her way for the exit. Her stealth suit would see to it that she wouldn’t be found and captured, or at least she thought it would.
She darted down the halls towards the exit making each turn before the two men would be able to have a line of sight on her. As soon as she got out of the ship she stopped at the hanger entrance. She wanted to get a look at the two men’s puzzled faces. It was a special joy of hers ever since she got the suit. Watching her victims panicked faces as they desperately look for her invisible form.
“These two were no different, she thought, a couple frantic glances around and then they would start swearing and cursing the heavens like everyone else.”
As they began to calming walk out of the ship into the hanger she felt a ping of emotion go through her. Why were these men not freaking out, why were they so unmotivated.
The man with the pretty blue eyes came off the ship and stared right at her. Not at the area around her or past her but right at Misty.
“Could he see me?” she thought, “How? I am completely invisible; how does he know where I am?”
She took a step back and turned to run back towards the Nest when she felt fear grip my heart. She raced for the nearest set of buildings. After five blocks of running she had to stop. She was so afraid she had trouble breathing her hands were shaking uncontrollably. She waited to see if they would follow her. Ten seconds pasted, third seconds, one minute, two minutes.
“I’m safe,” I whispered in relief.
No sooner had those words escaped her mouth then the two business men with the blue gloves came around the corner looking right at her and moving at a very brisk walk. Misty ran.
She snapped back to reality.
“Am I going to die?” she thought as the sound of the two men footsteps grew closer. She got up to run the last five blocks to the Nest and safety when she was overcome with terror. She couldn’t move she could scarcely breath and everything inside her screamed “run.” She tried to move but her body was frozen with fear. Her terror grew with the sound the business men’s footsteps drawing closer; until finally both men were looking down on Misty as she sat huddled in fear.
“She what she knows,” said the blue eyed man.
The man with glasses looked down at her stared in her eyes. Misty saw the event of the last hour pass through her mind.
He looked back at the other man, “kill her.”
He pull out and Alden’s hold out pistol and pointed and Misty’s face.
She closed her eyes and thought “it’s over; I never thought this would be how it would end.”
ZAPPP!!!!!
Misty Miller sprung to life to the familiar sound of a Spassky going off.
“Where am I” she thought, “This isn’t a random street corner.” As she looked around she realized that she was in the Nest. The Spassky was the result of another bar fight the bounces were taking care of. “How did I get here?” she looked down and saw a shot glass in front of her and an empty bottle of whisky on the table. “What, had it all been a dream?”
